The Academy for Global Citizenship is a Chicago Public Schools magnet campus with an emphasis on creating a better world through academics and global mindedness. With its motto “this is how we change the world,” the school teaches rigorous academic-focused subjects like reading and math but also takes an individualized, holistic approach that educates the whole student. This not only increases a child’s chances for future success but also their individual development and problem-solving.
Enrolling 450 students from kindergarten through eighth grade, the Academy boasts a unique net-positive energy campus built in 2005 according to the guidelines of the National Living Building Challenge The campus produces far more energy than it consumes through initiatives like composting, wastewater recycling, solar energy and urban farming, all of which become teaching tools for students to create a better future. The subject matter of environmental stewardship is augmented by other programs such as yoga and wellness initiatives, urban gardening, ecological habit building and organic, nutritional breakfast and lunches each day. Academically, a 21st-century learning environment makes use of subject matter and experiential service on campus and in the community as teaching tools that go far beyond the classroom.
