One of fifteen Chicago Acero School campuses, Torres Elementary shares Acero’s commitment to providing an environment centered around academic success and achievement. Acero focuses on diversity, acceptance, equity and pride in a Hispanic cultural context. Founded in 2008, Torres serves a population of 600 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school places an emphasis on collaboration, community and cohesion, developing skills and approaches that prepare its students for high school and beyond. Torres students regularly place above the 80th percentile in reading and math on national standardized tests. Torres Elementary is named after war hero Private First-Class soldier Omar E Torres, who died in Iraq in 2007. The Torres community believes that education is the single greatest unit of change in society, a motto that drives its anti-racism and bilingual-based curriculum focused on the evolution of language, cross-linguistic connections and socio-cultural competencies. Torres features several EdTech Programs, as well as collaborations with the Chicago Blackhawks through its physical education program. Extracurriculars include Wildcat athletics, mathletes and student council. Parental involvement through volunteering and online community discussions is encouraged and nurtured to ensure parental involvement in their child's education.
