ASPIRA Haugan Middle School is a charter school in Albany Park that promises to challenge students in grades six through eight with a rigorous curriculum. The school’s goal is to help learners develop the skills and habits needed to become effective leaders beyond school, in their future workplaces and in their communities. ASPIRA Haugan’s motto, “Leadership Through Education,” is accomplished by utilizing the ASPIRA process, a curriculum established by the non-profit organization of the same name. This process gives students ownership of their own progress via three main steps: awareness — using self-reflection to determine and express their existing knowledge base, analysis — determining what they need to know by engaging in critical thinking, and action — assuming leadership and taking the steps necessary to achieve their goals. Students who attend an ASPIRA-affiliated school are affectionately known as “Aspirantés,” and graduates of ASPIRA Haugan will be in good company. Past Aspirantés include state legislators, successful business people and even a pair of well-known Hollywood actors. A small total enrollment of just 310 students makes it possible for children to receive personalized attention from instructors. ASPIRA Haugan’s robust extracurricular programs and plenty of opportunities for parental involvement help foster a strong community. All of these factors add up to ensure that students here graduate ready to take on high school and the world beyond.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
