Frederick Douglass Academy High School serves ninth through 12th graders in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago with a curriculum that prepares students for entering college and starting a career. Named after Frederick Douglass, famed abolitionist, author and champion of human rights, the school emphasizes an academic program that includes the core subjects of English, math, science and social studies, plus supplemental courses in art, technology and world languages. Frederick Douglass offers Advanced Placement courses in biology, English, U.S. government and U.S. history. Students can also participate in extracurriculars like dance and the school's talent show to channel their creativity and express themselves. The Frederick Douglass Tigers compete in basketball, baseball, football, volleyball and cheerleading, waving the school's blue and gold spirit colors at home and away games. Frederick Douglass Academy High School alumni have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, which include: Stillman College, Yale, the University of Chicago, Northern Illinois University, Kentucky State University and Lincoln University. Showcasing colorful murals of community leaders on its walls, Frederick Douglass Academy High School reminds students at every turn of who they can become and what they can achieve, echoing the inspirational message of its namesake, "What is possible for me is possible for you."
