Jesse Owens broke Olympic records and set multiple world records in 1936. Owens, who later headed up his own public relations firm and a jazz program on a Chicago radio station, provides students at Jesse Owens Elementary Community Academy North with a powerful role model to emulate.
Jesse Owens Elementary Community Academy is split into two separate schools. Owens South enrolls prekindergarten through second-grade students. They are then moved to Owens North which serves third through eighth graders. Both schools are located on South State Street. They emphasize academic excellence through responsible social interaction, STEM curriculum and art appreciation for all students.
The Jesse Owens Children's Garden was established in partnership with Steady Grow Pro who donated over 200 plants for the academy's fourth through seventh-grade students to grow. The garden is seeded with tulips and crocuses in the fall. The students then tend to tomatoes and peppers in the spring. The garden provides children with ongoing interaction with nature and wildlife.
Students can also channel their musical talent by participating in the Chicago Children's Choir, the drumline and the Jesse Owens Academy band. At the Jesse Owens Elementary Community Academy, students are empowered to learn hands-on.
