The oldest two-way bilingual elementary school in the United States, the Inter-American Elementary Magnet School serves Lakeview at 851 W. Waveland Ave. and provides a stimulating learning environment to pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students as part of the Chicago Public School District's specialized programming for language studies. The Inter-American Elementary Magnet School focuses on a Spanish immersion classroom experience that promotes the social and cognitive development of the whole child. 37% of Inter-American Elementary students test proficient in math and 41% are proficient readers. The Inter-American Elementary Magnet School enrolls 697 students who enjoy an average classroom size of 24 and a student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Inter-American Elementary's "Curriculum of the Americas" focuses on the history of the Latino people and current issues related to living as a person of Latino descent. History courses cover Taínos, Incas, Mayas and Aztecs cultures. Present social conditions of Latinos are reviewed through studies in social justice. The Inter-American Elementary Magnet School carves out a unique niche in Chicago's educational system for the study of Spanish language and culture.

Fantastic environment and genuinely caring teachers. Many staff have or had children attend IAMS so they even trust their colleagues with their children's learning. Such a unique family the school is and happy my children are part of it.
