A Chicago Public Schools campus located in the Wicker Park neighborhood, Jose De Diego Community Academy serves over 450 students from pre-K through 8th grade. The school opened in 1982 and is named after Puerto Rican statesman and author Jose de Diego, who is honored for his contributions to literature and advocacy for Puerto Rican independence. The school’s historic home was built in the late 19th century, housing two large high schools before switching to an elementary curriculum in the 1980s. De Diego Elementary invests in fostering a 21st century curriculum with an emphasis on inclusivity. Programs include tutoring in language arts and mathematics. Students can participate in extracurricular activities, including intramural athletics, art club, choir, band, drama and a book club. Yearly events include an art fair, a science fair and a back-to-school barbecue. De Diego Academy seeks to involve all school personnel, students, parents and community members as partners in the continuous process of reading, mathematics and technological improvement.

As a graduate from Jose De Diego I really loved the community between teacher and student. All of my teachers helped me both in my academics and as a person. The school also lets me volunteer and help around whenever. The school is also becoming more modernized where the computers andan tablets are upgraded here and there. In addition the resources they find to help students better learn and understanding are a lot. All of these ideas and innovations both the school and the teacher do are for the better of the students. In order to better their learning experience and to let them enjoy it while doing it.

Previously she had been at home with a nanny or parent. She learned concepts that I hadn't learned until Kindergarten or 1st grade back in the...
