The Lewis School of Excellence on N. Leamington Avenue educates Austin's preschoolers through eighth graders on Chicago's West Side. The school is named in honor of Leslie Lewis, one of Chicago's first Superintendents of Schools. Built in 1926, the Lewis School was renovated in 1998, adding three more stories. Today, the school showcases nearly 50 classrooms, a running track, activity park, library and media center, and enrolls almost 600 students. The Leslie Lewis School of Excellence is part of the Chicago Public Schools Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) network. AUSL is a Chicago nonprofit management group that improves school academic outcomes in urban environments. AUSL programs help grow students' literacy and math-based skills with pacing guides, bi-weekly assessments and individualized time with teachers. The Lewis School of Excellence combines a scholastic core curriculum with athletic and after-school activities. As the Lewis Lions’ student-athletes roar toward victory, they’re expected to learn the value of sportsmanship and integrity as student ambassadors. Students can also enrich their lives with extracurriculars including art, choir, community service, spoken word, drama and dance. Creating a strong foundation for personal and scholastic successes, the Lewis School of Excellence is committed to celebrating its students' accomplishments.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
