Dr. Jorge Prieto Math and Science Academy is a public school that serves about 1,000 students from prekindergarten through eighth grade. The school features a dual-language program for students who speak Spanish at home. The program ensures those students succeed by receiving a large portion of instruction in Spanish, while at the same time helping them learn English as a second language. The dual language program starts with 80% of instruction given in Spanish to kindergarten students. The percentage declines with each grade level until fourth grade, when students receive half of their instruction in Spanish and half in English. Students must apply to participate in the dual language program. Regardless of the language students speak, Prieto Academy focuses on math and science instruction. Beyond academics, the school offers sports such as basketball, soccer, yoga, cross country and cheerleading. Other activities include clubs for art, math and science.
