St. Helen School is a private Catholic elementary school that sits at the nexus between Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park. True to its location in one of the great cultural melting pots of Chicago, SHS prides itself on the diversity and strength of its community.
On one hand, SHS is a preschool-through-eighth-grade Catholic school attached to a parish church. On the other hand, 35% of the 350-some students are non-Catholic. There's also diversity in the curriculum: Along with standardized core subjects, students take classes in fine arts, PE, music, foreign languages and religion.
Extracurriculars are also important to student life at SHS. Cross-country has recently been running at the state level, and other teams here include soccer, basketball and track. In addition to sports, there are many of the clubs and activities you'd expect — and some that might surprise you. After-school standouts include LEGO club, 3D printing, early childhood robotics, altar servers, piano lessons and high school test prep.
Since 1914, SHS has been able to adapt to its changing surroundings. This success is partly due to the deep connection with the local community. Dads' and moms' clubs, a grandparents' day, holiday parties, fairs, chili cook-offs and a blockbuster annual carnival are all part of the ongoing effort to build relationships and raise funds.
