Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood on the north side of the city of Columbia, approximately 320 sixth through eight grade students attend Heyward Gibbes Middle School (Heyward Gibbes). The home of the Eagles is part of Richland One School District, the fifth largest district in South Carolina. Students at Heyward Gibbes make average academic progress from one grade to the next as compared to learners at other schools across the state. The school offers a positive student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1, and most of this public school’s educators have spent three or more years in the classroom. Heyward Gibbes’ Eagles also have opportunities to participate in various extracurricular activities, including student council, a seventh-grade girls Ladies of Excellence mentoring initiative, a Young Teens mentoring program for boys, and the school’s “Project LIT” book club. Sixth-grade students can participate in track and field, and seventh and eighth grade students can participate in basketball, cheerleading, football, volleyball, wrestling and track and field. The school’s athletic coordinator stresses the importance of academics, requiring student-athletes to maintain at least a C average to participate in sports. Heyward Gibbes’ administration believes that community-wide collaboration is essential, to help ensure the progress of each student.
