Dora Moore School’s significant two-story brick- and terra cotta-building is a landmark in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. Denver’s oldest school, which is listed on the national historic registry, first opened in 1890 under the name Corona School. In 1929, the school’s name was changed to honor Dora Moore, a longtime teacher and principal. This city neighborhood school has many famous alumni, including former Denver Mayors Quigg Newton and William H. McNichols, who attended Dora Moore together in the early 1920s. Actor Douglas Fairbank Sr., comedian Tim Allen, and former first lady Mamie Eisenhower are some other noteworthy Dora Moore School graduates. Today, Dora Moore School serves a population of about 350 students in an upgraded building with a gymnasium and renovated cafeteria. The school provides programs for the visual arts, vocal and instrumental music, physical education, dance and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programming for kindergarten through eighth grade. Dora Moore School also has an early childhood education program with 3- and 4-year-old preschool classes. Dora Moore School’s goal is to give students a comprehensive education, as reflected by its mission statement of “all day, every day, every child.”
