As the only 3-8th grade school in the state of Colorado, Fort Logan Northgate’s Commanders can certainly claim their school is unique. But learning in a state-of-the-art, award-winning building gives them even more to brag about. With a population of around 500 students in the southwest Denver suburb of Sheridan, the partial two-story school houses separate elementary and middle school academic wings, joined by common spaces such as a gymnasium, art rooms, cafeteria and library.

The 102,000-square-foot facility achieved LEED Gold certification for its adherence to green building standards. Classrooms allow for optimal daylighting, the building uses a geo-exchange heating and cooling system, and its flex learning spaces and “cafetorium” earned a national “Outstanding Project” award from Learning by Design magazine.

Each grade has its own set of Chromebooks, there are multiple technology labs in the school and the long list of electives includes video production, robotics, 3-D art, drama, choir, social justice and engineering. Fort Logan Northgate has earned a Common Sense School badge for its commitment to helping students think critically and using technology responsibly, to learn and create. The school also offers opportunities for student athletes such as volleyball, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, track and field and cheer teams.

For my experience, at Fort Logan Northgate, there are amazing resources, however, not enough of them for every student. Teachers and supporters are amazing and willing to learn and support students as much as they can. However, for those with disabilities, their civil rights or safety are not being...

Today they pulled a girl out of class because she h...
