Residents of the Montbello neighborhood have many good schools to choose from, including public, private, and charter schools. Monarch Montessori is another option offered through Denver Public Schools. The school offers infant, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through fifth grade programs and enrolls 212 students. Located at 4895 Peoria St., the school is outside of the residential area, but the building is new and well-designed with a large, fenced outdoor play area. The play area is colorful and imaginative. It features outdoor learning areas as well as playground equipment, in accordance with Montessori philosophy. There is also a playhouse, a course designed to teach balance and coordination, and a garden. Monarch teaches in 3-hour blocks, allowing students the chance to fully explore their interests in the subject. Classrooms are open and integrated by age, so that older students can mentor and guide younger ones. Staff is highly qualified and includes an Outdoor Learning Specialist and a Dual Language Primary. Teachers, or Lead Guides, must have a degree and two years of additional Montessori training and certification. Test scores in reading, writing and math for the school are below state averages, though in keeping with other schools in adjacent neighborhoods. The Montessori method stresses teaching through play and experience, so traditional measurements of progress and achievement may not apply. Parent reviews indicate that most are very happy with the school and their children are thriving.

Family like community that supports my child’s growth, academically and socially! It’s a small school so all the teachers know my child!

Terrible!!! The worst school ever. Will never recommend to anyone. They care more about fundraising, than actually teaching kids and getting involved with the parents. Questions are not being answered, problems are not being solved. They just talk to you and do nothing about it.

We love it. The sense of community is very strong from the front desk, teachers and leadership. People really care about the kids in this school. There are several schools closer to our home. We drive extra distance to Monarch, because the staff has developed a bond with our kids. We appreciate them...

Excellent. My 4th grader receives personalized attention, and the school is a diverse and close-knit community. The test scores don't mean much- a lot of Montessori families opt out or don't take the tests seriously, as the tests don't align with Montessori philosophy. But my child has been here for...
