Home of the Payne Panthers, Willard F. Payne Elementary School educates kids from kindergarten through sixth grade. Located in the northwest section of the neighborhood, the school is on a residential street near retail shops and restaurants. The school’s Spanish-style architecture gives it a unique appearance. With just over 400 students, Payne provides several programs for children with special needs and a gifted program for accelerated learners. Students can participate in fun reading activities throughout the year including the “Read Across America” program. The school hosts a Spanish Dual Immersion program for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, where students receive instruction in both languages. Payne has playgrounds, basketball courts and a large field for athletic activities. The school also has a multipurpose auditorium and gym for student activities, meetings and performances. Payne participates in the state’s Positive Behavior Intervention & Support program, which received an award in 2019 for successfully implementing the program that helps students practice positive social behavior.
