Founded in 1967, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School grew out of a new effort to bring students together more equitably. Originally known as the "Laboratory School," in the 1970s, the school moved to 2424 Lake St. and combined with Skiles Middle School to form a kindergarten through eighth grade magnet school. Today, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School's curriculum integrates the applied and performing arts, literature and writing into an academic core of math, science and language studies. Each year, the school celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday with an exhibition of student achievements and performances that include songwriting and composition, playwriting, live poetry, storytelling, debate and service-learning projects. The school's students enjoy smaller classroom sizes of 20 and an average teacher-to-student ratio of only 11-to-1. Ranked among the most diverse public middle schools in Illinois by Niche, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School is enriched by a student body devoted to the arts as a medium for creative self-expression and personal academic growth.

However, with our youngest we felt like they might get lost in the crowd at the larger middle school and decided to send them to King Arts. Academically it’s very weak. There’ve been a couple de...

My child attended King Arts for seven years. His experience was great, until he got to the sixth grade. His teacher harassed and bullied him. Made racists comments and made him sit on the floor. Even when he tried to sit at the table with his classmates she denied him a chair. He is in the seventh g...

We're so pleased to be a part of the King Arts community! Principal Brown and the teachers at our school are all very involved, committed and caring. We love the various arts programs and couldn't be happier here!

We've been at King Arts for the past 3 years. Most of the teachers are very good. The principal, Dr. Brown, is amazing. There is a strong PTA. If you get involved you'll soon get to know many of the staff, administration and other parents. We love the fine arts and literary focus. My 2nd grader just...
