Named after the renowned author whose legendary “Grapes of Wrath” closed with the Joad family settling in Fresno, John Steinbeck Elementary is located near Highway 99 on North Milburn Avenue. Part of the Central Unified School District, Steinbeck Elementary serves students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The school also offers a transitional kindergarten program for students who turn five between September 2 and December 2, providing students with additional academic preparation. Since opening in 1995, the school has focused on preparing students for the 21st century by standing by high academic and behavioral standards for each of the school’s approximately 680 students. School doesn’t necessarily end when the bell rings for the Steinbeck Sharks. The school participates in the CEAL athletics program. Students can choose from a variety of seasonal sports, including football, girls volleyball, cross country, wrestling, girls and boys basketball, baseball, and softball. The programs cheerleaders support the players throughout the year! The school’s Shark Island Expanded Learning Program brings exciting opportunities for students. The program is committed to helping students reach success through a positive environment and is focused on developing the next generation of leaders. Go Sharks!

The school is unorganized. My child is in kinder and I honestly fear for her safety. The first few weeks I understand are rough. But months into the school year and it is still bad. This school is in progress. With the principal just having gotten used to her position but my son is a GATE child and he is put in a class with 10-12 GATE students and the rest are standard program children which wouldn't be a big deal if his class was small but there are over 30 kids in his class....
