Ida G. Diaz Junior High School, home of the Buccaneers, is a middle school campus located in Hidalgo, Texas on Pirate Drive. Built in 1983, the school is named after Ida Diaz. In the 2000s, the school underwent a period of extensive renovations. Today, it employs a staff of more than 50 educators, administrators and staff. The school serves grades six through eight and has a total of 630 students in attendance. Students study a wide variety of subjects, from English to social studies, as well as technology, Spanish and physical education. Extracurricular activities include competitive sports, band, National Junior Honor Society, a book club and more. In the classroom setting, the student-to-teacher ratio is 13-to-1. Ida G. Diaz Junior High is part of the Hidalgo Independent School District. The school district has been awarded numerous distinctions throughout its history, including the HEB Excellence in Education District of the Year award.
