Blackshear Elementary was built in 1916 and named after Edward L. Blackshear, who later served as the director of what is now known as Prairie View A&M University. Located at 2900 Holman St., within Houston’s historic Third Ward neighborhood, Blackshear Elementary is part of the Houston Independent School District and serves pre-kindergarten through grade five. The school is open to students who reside within the school zone or are accepted through the district’s magnet program. Blackshear Elementary is one of just a few schools within Houston’s Independent School District that offers a Montessori magnet program. Montessori learning revolves around self-directed activities, hands-on learning and a focus on the child’s interests and abilities, all under the guidance of a Montessori-trained teacher. The school also offers a gifted and talented program. Blackshear Elementary is home to approximately 350 students, with a student-teacher ratio of about 16-to-1. Blackshear Elementary School’s logo consists of a crest with the phrase, “Where the pride of Third Ward begins,” which seems fitting given the school’s history, community engagement and core values, which include integrity, mutual respect, determination and courage.

I love this school. My son graduated kindergarten reading and doing math which has been a joy to see. The holiday programs are always so well put together and thoughtful. The staff is conscious of the community they serve and they work hard to do their best.
