Like much of Independence Heights, Booker T. Washington High School Booker embraces its past while building for the future. Nicknamed “Booker T,” the school was started in 1892 and was rebuilt on its present Yale Street site in 1959. The school now serves 762 students in Grades 9-12. About half of the school’s Golden Eagles are enrolled in a magnet program known as the High School for Engineering Professions. Booker T opened its new building in the 2018 school year. The building features outdoor teaching and dining areas and a state-of-the-art gym. Athletic teams, including football, basketball, track and field, and girls' volleyball and golf, take full advantage of the gym. A full-time after-school coordinator supervises extracurricular activities, including choir, culinary arts, and a video game club. Although Booker T. Washington High’s graduation rate and standardized test scores lag behind the state median, students are making acceptable academic progress. Students enjoy a favorable 13:1 student/teacher ratio, lower than the district average. Booker T is part of the tapestry of life in Independence Heights. Students and residents are proud of the beautiful new building and the revitalizing engineering magnet program.

My experience with Washington B.T.H.S. has been overall pretty positive with only minor cons. The only negative thing is that the state take over the HISD district has restricted a lot and has made the school more strict.

My experience was just average. Most students don't care about school. Can't learn in classrooms with all the distractions. Only take AP classes if you want to actually learn. School is doing more to make it a passing school.

Students develop an attitude of not caring because when they get to the school, that's the attitude that is encouraged. The school environment is unsafe and the students are out of control. Good teachers leave because they are treated poorly and only unqualified staff stays. So many unprepared stude...

I'm a senior at Booker T. Washington currently and I'm going to have to disagree with all of the previous reviews. I've really enjoyed my years at Booker T. and learned a lot about engineering. I recently got accepted to Rice University for mechanical engineering.
