Ed White Elementary School is one of the few Houston Independent School District schools in Chinatown. Located on Triola Lane, the school was named in honor of astronaut Ed White, the first American to walk in space. White was killed in 1967, the year the school opened, during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission. With Ed White as inspiration, the elementary school emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math in its studies. The school partners with Project Lead the Way, an innovative project-based program that helps students develop and apply math and science skills in real-world scenarios. Besides technical skills, students learn to think critically and communicate effectively to solve problems. Students at Ed White Elementary consistently score above the state average for math and science, while reading and writing scores are slightly below the state average. Extracurricular offerings include soccer, art, music and chess. Situated next to the Chinatown neighborhood’s Crain Park, Ed White Elementary strives to bring nature into the students’ studies. The school’s nature center, which is often cared for and renovated by local volunteers, allows students to learn hands-on about biodiversity and the ecosystem.
