Nestled in the middle of the Magnolia Park community is Felix Tijerina Elementary School, a pre-K through fifth grade Houston Independent School District campus. Since 1979, Tijerina Elementary School has been educating Magnolia Park’s elementary students through programs including Gifted and Talented, inclusion and speech therapy services, transitional bilingual programs, and a special education curriculum. Tijerina Elementary received an “A” in the latest round of ratings from the Texas Education Agency, a distinction analyzing both the school’s progress and the students’ achievements. Although Tijerina scored a “C” in student achievement, the campus earned an “A” overall thanks to high marks for school progress and closing the gap, an analysis of educational outcomes across all student backgrounds. In the 2020-2021 school year, Tijerina Elementary was recognized as a Platinum Certified Family Friendly School, meaning that the campus’ principal, teachers and faculty displayed the highest commitment in partnering with community members to promote academic excellence. Tijerina Elementary School is named after Felix Tijerina, a Houston restaurateur and civics leader who helped educate Mexican-Americans on their right and duty to vote. Most notably, Tijerina founded the Little Schools of the 400, a preschool program that served as the model for the national Head Start program. Today, the school that bears his name is one of the strongest elementary schools in Magnolia Park, serving approximately 430 Magnolia Park students.
