Jack Yates High School first opened on February 8, 1926, and was named in honor of the Reverend Jack Yates, a formerly enslaved person who became a highly respected minister and influential leader in Houston. At the time, Jack Yates High School was only the second school for African Americans in Houston, with Booker T. Washington High School being the first. Located in the heart of Houston’s Third Ward, the school offers two separate magnet programs, one in communications and the other being a maritime academy for students pursuing careers in maritime logistics. Jack Yates High School has proudly produced several successful alumni who have made significant contributions to the world. Prestigious alumni include actress Debbie Allen, musician Johnny Nash and author/journalist Roland Martin, who recently established a scholarship at the school for Yates students wishing to pursue a college education. Many of the school’s alumni continue to provide support to their alma mater even decades after graduation  a testament to the deep connection students often feel with the high school. Yates High School has a comprehensive athletics program consisting of a wide variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, swimming, track and volleyball. In 2021 the Houston Texans donated the team’s artificial playing surface from Houston’s NRG Stadium to the school’s athletics department, which demonstrates the strong level of support the school receives from the community.

As I entered my last year of high school I was lucky enough to experience my senior year at Yates High School. And so far I have been enjoying it.

My experience at Yates has been very interesting. There has been some good and some bad it's just all about how you perspective it. Yates isn't a bad place it's just a place where life will really get to you and God will test you. I will never regret choosing Yates for my four years of high school

This school is horrible. Starting from the principle on down. There is no communication with the parents. The staff is there to collect a check and are not there for the psychological, emotional well being of the students.

Disappointed. I do not know who to trust. There are elephants in the room, and no one says anything. A situation exists with some students and parents drawing other students into risky behavior. Am still reeling that these people are involved in extra curricula activities.

Yates is a great school for my child because her needs are being met. Her self esteem has improved tremendously. I transferred my child from a supposedly top rate magnet campus. Unfortunately some of the teachers at that campus did not teach. They bullied or ignored students that could not be succes...
