Great Hearts Irving is a tuition-free charter school that stresses a classical, liberal arts education. The curriculum centers on the notion that “wisdom begins with wonder.” Elementary, middle and high school students all attend this charter school.
Great Hearts Irving strives to create a community-rich atmosphere that forms bonds among students, parents and faculty around the education of the students. The school holds several events during the year, including a Fall Festival, Cricket Classic and Storybook Festival. Students can participate in sports, clubs and other extracurricular activities at all grade levels.
Starting in sixth grade, students rotate among six houses named after famous figures. These houses, like the House Belisarius or House Darius, teach students to conduct themselves virtuously. Each house has designated colors, a motto and a full-scale crest. Students of each house collaborate with their housemates on service projects. They also compete in various events, like an annual House Race and Field Day, which is structured after the Olympics.
The school is funded by the State of Texas and offers open enrollment, but it does maintain a waitlist if spots aren’t available for all the students that apply.

great hearts is a very new having only opened in 2015, which means there is many things that still need to be established. I am in the first graduating class and alot of responsibilty is on our shoulders to set an example for younger students and to test new classes and teaching methods that were a possibilty for the future. All courses are liberal arts based and very different from what you would find in a public school. Most of the teachers are very eager to teach and to help students one-on-one, and are dedicated to help every student succeed. there are several things that I hope become part of great hearts irving in the future ( or existing things that improve) I hope there is dual credit classes, I hope the sports become more organized and established, events like prom and homecoming are more organized and relaxed.

Very good environment, I am not worried when I go to school. But, no AP or IB classes offered, and you don't get to choose your own curriculum.

I believe I received a good education. I definitely enjoyed the challenge. But their lack of a P.E. program for most of high school is a serious downside and I sometimes felt I was pushed too hard.

The teachers show obvious bias and I have recently had a friend break down after class due to numerous racist comments from the students as well as heavy attacks from the teacher when she wasn't acting out. We have been so impressed with this school. The staff really cultivate a joy of learning and are passionate about teaching. Our son is thriving and loves attending every day.
