A nationally rated Blue Ribbon School, James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School is a magnet school for gifted and talented children. Founded in 1991, JWJ is named in honor of Jacksonville native and former school principal James Weldon Johnson. JWJ was the first middle school in Duval County to offer an enrichment program with advanced classes designed to ensure high school and college success. The school’s core academic curriculum is enriched with rigorous courses that prepare students for advanced placement courses, early college entry programs and the ability to earn credits for high school subjects in algebra, geometry, biology, French, Spanish and Chinese.
JWJ’s 1,000 students rally around their Trojans in athletics with 10 different sports, including football, baseball, swimming, volleyball and soccer. Students can explore their creativity with programs in painting and sculpture, music, theater and dance. The school celebrates its diverse student body and interests with various clubs such as the Chinese Club, the Black History Club, the Bollywood Dance Club, the Closet Club and the Scholar Bowl/Quiz Bowl. Students may apply to JWJ through the Duval County School Choice Program.

During my years of attending this school, I have found the several friends that I've stuck with until now, 4 years after. James Weldon Johnson helped me create a new mindset and experience new beginnings that have made me grow into who I am today. The activities and fun memories are the most cherish able things I will always remember at my times at the school.
