In the northwestern section of the Blenheim Square- Research Hospital neighborhood of Kansas City lies Hogan Preparatory Academy. It’s a tuition-free public charter school serving students throughout the Kansas City Public School District. Hogan Prep, named after the first Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City, was originally a private Catholic school. It became a charter school in 1999 and remains one of the oldest charter schools in Missouri. It now serves around 1,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Hogan prides itself on providing its students with a strong academic foundation, leadership skills and career path awareness. Students receive a competitive advantage because they graduate with a “market value asset,” as the school says, or real-world learning experiences. The elementary school focuses on awareness — an awareness of how to apply their education to their lives. The middle school focuses on exploration — an exploration of interests and career opportunities available to them. High school is all about preparing students for life and equipping them with top-notch academics and real-world skills. Graduates have the added benefit of securing an internship, college credit hours or an industry-recognized credential by the time they graduate from Hogan Prep. 91% of seniors graduate from Hogan Preparatory Academy, which is above the 88% graduation rate for the state of Missouri and far above the 74% graduation rate of Kansas City Public Schools. Students can participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Science Club, Art Club, Photography, and more. For the athletically inclined, Hogan Prep offers students the opportunity to play several sports, including volleyball, football, basketball and many others.

What I liked about Hogan was that it's focus is on higher education. It also provided me with certain material that I needed in order to meet criteria of certain universities that I would like to attend. The environment of the school molded me into the young woman that I'm becoming. The staff showed support and love towards all students that attended. Some things that I would like to see different in Hogan is having more resources. More lesson plans that will help the average student in not just going to college but also helping them maintain being a college student. Programs that will help them finish. Also having more clubs and after school activities for students to do besides participating in sports.
