The First Lutheran School has been educating children in Knoxville since 1870. Today, the private school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. It operates an early childhood education (ECE) program for children between the ages of one and four, as well as five-year-olds who miss the state cut-off to enter kindergarten. The four-year-old classroom is a kindergarten preparatory environment. The school exceeds the state education standards, and elementary students focus heavily on reading and writing as their educational foundation. In six through eighth grades, First Lutheran students receive a solid foundation to succeed in high school and the rigorous coursework means students can complete Algebra 1 in eighth grade and enroll in higher-level math in high school. Students also learn Spanish, putting them ahead of their peers when they take high school Spanish. In addition to its regular academic programming, the school offers before- and after-school care, summer camp and opportunities to participate in athletics, music and art programs.
