GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I loved BVA when we first started 6 years ago but each year they require more online time and it feels like they only care about their state ranking. They make it clear that they are the ones who are the teachers and us parents are the moderators (I was personally told this when questioning a few things). Be fully aware that your child will have a minimum of 60 minutes of added online time above and being any curriculum you choose. This is even if you choose the at home curriculum and not the seminar pathway. We wanted to stay but the added busy work is just getting ridiculous.

I love the flexibility that is provided from all of the different class options. I have not liked the lack of support for college preparation. We have a school counselor, but I don't think she is very well equipped to provide good support in thinking about majors and a path of study. While I have had some amazing teachers, I have also been disappointed by the lack of rigor in some classes and the teacher's lack of knowledge about the subject.

I've most appreciated the individualized learning that BVA offers virtual students. You can either choose to go the route of more traditional homeschooling options or the route of on-line classes. The faculty and teachers work to enhance their talents and strengthen the areas where they are still working. The teachers have been exceptional in encouraging and modeling a love for learning. I am very happy with the education that my children have received at BVA. Another great option has been the ability to take college classes that are paid for by the school. Students are also encouraged to take CLEP classes and AP classes. BVA also pays for music and sports classes and youth YMCA memberships.

Being able to be involved in my child's learning is very important to me. I feel this school has wonderful communication and offers the guidance the child and their family needs.
