Well performing large schools aren’t always easy to find, but Wando High School not only raises that bar, it also sets it. As a 5A public high school, one generally with more than 2500 students, Wando excels in both academics and athletics and has an overall reputation of excellence. Serving grades nine through twelve in the East Charleston/Mt. Pleasant area, Wando offers more than 200 academic courses including Advance Placement, honors, dual credit and applied technology. In addition to the core subjects of English, math, science and social studies, the school offers foreign language classes in French, German, Latin and Spanish. Electives include marching band, orchestra, drama, dance, chorus and the visual arts. Career and Technical Education classes are also available in nearly a dozen disciplines including business management, finance, health science, hospitality management and human services, and there is an Air Force JRTOC unit on campus. Wando has a 93 per cent graduation rate. The secret to Wando High School’s success is its use of a small learning communities structure that helps students feel connected both socially and academically. The Ninth Grade Academy helps freshmen learn responsibility and make decisions about their future. Grades 10 through 12 are organized into four career-related Schools of Study, and the AP Academy encourages student to pursue a rigorous course of study. All students are expected to create a personal plan for post-graduation education or career.

The teachers and staff are very positive and helpful and can tell that they want to help you succeed in your academic career. I suppose the worst experience was just some of the students because fights would break out sometimes around the school. I would like to see a more positive student atmosphere change for the better and not detur new students from attending with the negative energy.

I would like to see the English Department better their style of teaching as almost every student at Wando has had a bad experience with at least one of their English teachers. I feel they are very rude and grade harsh without actually teaching the proper way to write. The guidance counselors also do a poor job at communicating how to become college ready.

Also as mom of a minority student we found Wando to be totally inclusive. So grateful for such an amazing...

Students at this school are openly racist and homophobic. Administration is absolutely horrible. No one (admin, staff, principal, etc) actually cares about your student unless you've made them look good somehow. Homeschool your children instead, I recommend looking at K¹² Online School.
