St. Bernard Academy boasts a long West End history. It was founded in 1866 by the Sisters of Mercy from Dublin, Ireland. The school initially began as an all-girls school meeting in Downtown Nashville next door to the State Capitol building. Its mission focuses on the academic, spiritual and emotional education of students in a nurturing environment. When the school moved to the historic convent building on 21st Avenue in 1905, it grew to be so successful and popular that it expanded into a larger facility in 1960. It has continued to flourish in this current location. When the school faced a possible closure by the church in the ‘80s, parents formed a nonprofit group to save it and became the first group in the country to do this. St. Bernard’s carries on today as an independent Catholic school that serves around 350 students from preschool through eighth grade. The school added a 16,000-square-foot addition in 2016 on its 150th anniversary. The school is a National Catholic Education Association member in partnership with the Mercy Education System of the Americas. It emphasizes compassion and respect for diversity and the individual qualities of each student.

We can't say enough great things about SBA! We love the small class sizes, the amazing staff and educators and the wonderful community! The curriculum is academically strong but also meets my daughter where she is!

I am a new parent to SBA. However, since start of the school have a positive experience, including teachers and staff communications, communication with SBA parents, food quality for hot lunches. Staff always been respectful, professional, and supportive.

I feel my children are very safe at SBA. The teachers and staff take the safety of the school very seriously. It's evident in the programs, like Olweus, that safety is the priority.

We have a neuro atypical child with ADD and found the school ill equipped to handle a situation where some very small accommodations were needed. As soon as we left the school for a public school, his major issues disappeared and we no longer needed those accommodations. The school is just fine if y...

The school recently won the Blue Ribbon Award for academic excellence. The school's educational foundation of self-d...

Our son is very bright but has diagnosed learning differences. His and our experience at SBA was beyond disappointing; it was disastrous. SBA seems to be a great environment for focused, flexible kids with no learning or social challenges, but if your child falls outside of this description, look el...
