BASIS Independent Manhattan is private school offering coed classes for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade at their two Manhattan school locations. Prekindergarten through fifth grade students attend the original facility on the Upper West Side, while older students have a campus farther downtown in Chelsea.
The school’s name is often styled in capital letters, referring to the BASIS Educational Group, an Arizona-based charter school management company. The educational philosophy of BASIS schools is designed to align the learning experience in United States schools with more rigorous international standards.
BASIS Independent Manhattan features a college preparatory program, combining liberal arts courses with STEM-focused instruction in science, technology, engineer and mathematics. The school day is organized into two 85-minute blocks, one concentrating on humanities, the other on math and science.
Three recess periods each day take advantage of roughly 9,000 square feet of terraces, gardens, and outdoor recreational space on the school’s premises. Students at BASIS enjoy 25 after-school programs, with clubs for chess, cooking, drama, math, robotics, science and technology. The school also produces 27 music and theater performances each year.

We belong to the founding families of Basis Independent Manhattan. The teachers in elementary school instilled the passion for many subjects (math and physics in particular) in my son. That passion has carried over through middle and high school. Small class sizes and student hours help the students keep up with the challenging curriculum.
