Enrolling approximately three-hundred thirty students in grades ninth through twelfth, Broome Street Academy Charter High School partners with a non-profit youth development agency called the Door. Together, the Door and BSA (as it is often abbreviated) offer at-risk children tuition-free education and guidance programs. Situated inside the Door’s well-appointed six-story headquarters building at Sixth Avenue and Broome Street, the coeducational public charter school opened in 2011. It actively recruits at-risk students, supporting them with tutoring, counseling, and medical assistance. The Door began in an East Village storefront in 1972, founded by a group of young professionals in the fields of education, medicine, and sociology. The agency grew to administer programs in health care, supportive housing, and nutritious meals. In partnership with BSA, it also offers career development and college preparation assistance. In 2015 the Door sold the air rights to its building for $26.5 million, providing money that will fund its own programs as well as help support BSA. Current amenities in the updated school premises range from a modern, full-size gymnasium, to a dance studio, recording studio, science room, music room, and a computer lab. BSA enrichment programs mesh with the Door programs, and include extracurricular opportunities such as the culinary club, student council, and a wide range of sports offered through the Public School Athletic League.

For my experience attending this school, I personally don't think it's the best. The academics is poor and the college preparation isn't great. They also lack discipline and structure. However, the food and resources the school provides is pretty good. I don't think this school is terrible, but there are some flaws that need to be fixed to make this school better.

The school has a good emotional support system, but unfortunately has fights between students every other day. I will say that the school has increased its amount of college-ready courses and has The Door as a great resource.

The new Head of School seems to be doing a much better job leading the school. She is available to staff, students and parents/caregivers. She is building a better school community overall.
