Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School opened its doors in 1764 as a feeder grammar school for King’s College, now known as Columbia University. At its present location on the Upper West Side, the school hosts approximately 1,200 students in pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, registering a 6-1 student-teacher ratio. CGPS focuses on language, reading readiness and problem-solving skills in math and science in the early grades, while middle and upper school curricula expand into college preparatory classes in STEAM subjects, music, theater and sports. The Upper School identifies as Columbia Prep, enrolling almost half the total student population. It offers over 50 Advanced Placement and honors-level courses, hundreds of electives in English, history, math, science, art, technology, music, theater and physical education, numerous clubs and almost forty athletic teams. There is a maximum of 16 students in each class at this level, with a school-wide focus on college entrance preparation. The effort pays off in college acceptances from prestigious institutions like Cornell University, Duke University, University of Chicago and Stanford University. The list of clubs at CGPS is extensive. It includes familiar entries such as chess, debate and Model U.N., alongside unique offerings like the Columbia Blue Comedy Club, Endangered Species Entrepreneurs and Mock Trial.

The best part of my experience at Columbia Prep is that it gives you the opportunity to always meet with faculty and get extra help if you need. Teachers are always available and more than happy to help with anything!

It is a very welcoming community and teachers are very helpful. I would like to change the way school is organized beaches it takes a little while to get from class to class.

The academics are great and kids feel comfortable in their environment. NYC is a stressful place with high expectations, CPGS does a great job in helping kids...

Columbia may have been great once upon a time but has changed greatly in the last 10 years. It seems the administration is just interested in raising funds from rich parents to grow the physical plant and don't really pay attention to the dynamics of the teachers they hire or the student body that t...
