Middle School 245 The Computer School, also known simply as CS, hosts a coed student population of around 400 in the Upper West Side’s William O’Brian Campus that it shares with other public schools. A very low student-to-teacher ratio holds steady in classes across all grades, from sixth through eighth. As might be expected from its name, CS emphasizes technological literacy. But computer science is not the exclusive focus. Rather, it’s seen as enabling the learning process in all manner of coursework. The curriculum is linked to the Common Core academic standards, but goes above and beyond it: in English, for example, study is thematic and spans multiple genres, from fiction, nonfiction and poetry to drama and film. Eighth graders might study algebra in preparation for the Regents exam, but math is linked in interdisciplinary ways to every other subject taught. Social studies in sixth and seven grades lead naturally into a global studies concentration in eighth. Partnerships in resource-rich New York City offer exciting experiences, and CS students explore an impressive array. Among them are Guggenheim Museum, Ellis Island, Museum of Chinese in America, Lincoln Center Institute, and — close to the school’s home base — the American Museum of Natural History.

I always felt safe at The Computer School- we rarely had the need for security guards roaming on our floor.

I had an amazing time studying at the computer school. The teachers showed that they really cared for the students and their studies. Additionally the staff made sure to keep in touch with my parents regularly. All of this summed up equated into me achieving my goals and reaching high grades.

The leadership at the Computer School is not welcoming to any feedback regarding issues among students and or teachers. Communication between teachers and parents does not work well. We have had our children in four different Manhattan schools and this is by far the worst in terms of communication.

Great leadership at this school. Small, supportive learning environment. Parents are very involved which helps support the programs that the school needs.
