Strong connections with fellow classmates has shown to enhance educational advancement, which is why parents send their children to William T. Harris school. Located at 320 West 21st street in Chelsea, this school utilizes the concept of co-teaching classes in all of its grade levels from pre-k to 5th, in which children with special needs work along side of their general education peers. In place of report cards, portfolios are sent home with children’s work samples, teacher and student reflections, goals, and a variety of assessments. This public school ranks above average in student progress, student test scores, proficiency in math and reading, and teachers with more than 3 years experience. With a student body of over 850, the student/teacher ratio is 15 to 1. In addition to rigorous core academics, students are immersed in visual art, theater, music, dance, swim, gym, and more. The school has a big yard, a small yard, a rooftop play space and a dance room but no real gym; two classrooms with a wall removed serve the purpose. On cold days kids dance, play soccer, enjoy arts and crafts or watch a movie inside. Second- through 5th-graders have swim lessons in the pool once a week.

I had heard such wonderful things about PS11 before my child started, but was sad to see that the school seems to have lost its way. Principal Bender and his team play favorites — you need to curry his favor and the families that do receive preferential treatment. The teachers are overwhelmed and ne...

I'm astounded by the level of education at this school. My son is in Kindergarten G&T and is already reading. He has light homework which he does independently. He participates in after-school activities M-F and loves every activity/instructor. I always enjoyed school growing up and I'm so glad that...

PS 11 embraces diversity but misses the mark on equity and inclusion. The PS 11 community needs to re-evaluate DEI in the school. For example, the school has nearly 900 families yet the parent volunteer positions are mononopolized by helicopter parents who alienate other families from community involv...

I've had two daughters (one G&T and one gen ed) who have gone through PS 11. We're so grateful for the highly enriched program that has been accessible to all students. The school keeps getting better. The G&T program is definitely more academically rigorous, but the Gen Ed program has still produce...
