Enrolling students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, PS 140 Nathan Straus is named for one of the co-owners of New York City’s famed Macy’s department store. The three-story, brick school building was erected in 1959 with 28 classrooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium and dedicated computer and art rooms. Arts enrichment programs in dance, music, choir and visual arts supplement the Common Core curriculum that the school follows. The school also sponsors educational visits from notable figures and star athletes, and benefits from multiple partnerships with the Educational Alliance, Rosie's Broadway Kids, Artist Space, Marquis Studios, Champs, ThriveNYC, New York Cares and Asphalt Green, among others. Next door is the Nathan Straus Playground, home to basketball and handball courts, an asphalt blacktop for chalk drawings, a seasonal splash pad and traditional play equipment for children and toddlers. Also nearby is the Hamilton Fish Park and Recreational Center, with a swimming pool and sports facilities.

At one point in time this was one of the best schools in district 1 but it's like the saying goes all good things gotta come to come to an end. Mr. Barrentos after 30 years decided it was time to retire and man oh man why this school is now stuck with a "principal" that doesn't seem to know her job....

PS 140 is amazing! They truly want children to learn and will take the time to teach the kids that aren't able to learn as quick as the others. Their staff is courteous, sympathetic and have great technics to teach children. If they had additional funding they would definitely put it to good use. My...
