PS 811 Mickey Mantle School

Public Pre-K, Elementary, Middle School | Grade Pre-K-8
466 W End Ave,  New York, NY
4.0
Named for the New York Yankees baseball great, P811M — the Mickey Mantle School — offers classes from pre-kindergarten through high school and is dedicated to students with New York City Department of Education-approved IEPs, or individual lesson plans. At Mickey Mantle School, individualized attention is given to children with multiple disorders, autism, severe language or communication problems, or deep emotional or behavioral needs. The student population numbers around 400, with a 5-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Within the school is a real, functioning 1940s-style diner called “Route 66.” Faculty employ a multidisciplinary program incorporating literacy, math, health, science, social studies and art, with classes grounded in the process of operating the diner. Photos of Mickey Mantle and installations honoring the sports star are posted through the hall, intended to serve as inspiration for students. The celebrated main building, in which pre-K through eighth graders learn, represents one of the most impressive structures in the New York City educational system. The landmarked 1895 structure was built in the Flemish Revival style. The architects employed an “H-Plan” of school construction, revolutionary at the time, that increased the number of windows and circulation of fresh air. The limestone-trimmed brick building rises from a rough-cut stone foundation, with the main 82nd entrance marked by a Tudor-style stone porch.

This school cares about their students on an individual basis both at the West End Avenue site and its off sites.
