The Facing History School is a public high school located in Hell’s Kitchen that students from all five boroughs apply to through a lottery system as part of their high school application process. The school shapes their curriculum around four major themes: Identity, Caring and Responsibility, Decision-making and Choosing to Participate. The Facing History School focuses on unique problem-solving methods for math and science using the New York Performance Standards Consortium to assess students' abilities. Students who learn under this model are given more flexibility and time to solve complex problems, and the path they take to understand a problem is evaluated in addition to the answer. Giving high school students the freedom to explore problems in new ways has produced a high retention rate towards graduation from this special Hell’s Kitchen high school, with over 80 percent of students at The Facing History School earning their diploma.

I am graduating from Facing History this year. It is honestly a great school with generally good teachers. There are a lot of programming and arts partnerships. This is a portfolio school so you won't be taking regents. The work load is easy to handle. There are SAT prep opportunities but the school doesn't fully prepare you for them because testing is not a big part of the curriculum. It's an advantage and a curse. One thing the school could improve is discipline. They take restorative justice to a whole new level where there are no consequences for bad behavior.

I have had an overall good experience at FHS. If this school had the funding and student involvement then it would lead to better opportunities and better acedemics. Because there aren't many students participating in the after school we don't have good options. But what we do have I am grateful for. As long as all the opportunities I got throughout the years. This school has access to programs that improve college readiness but if I wasnt in a prepatory program then there wasn't the best college readiness.
