Named after New Jersey’s first black congressman, the Donald M. Payne, Sr. School of Technology is a public high school in the Fairmount neighborhood that offers a rigorous academic curriculum, in addition to technical and vocational programs for students in ninth through 12th grade. The impressive, newly built school building opened in 2018 and was constructed in less than two years on the site of the former United Hospital campus. Robust programs in environmental science, robotics, music technology and computer science are offered alongside traditional vocational programs such as plumbing, carpentry and masonry. Each subject is taught in specially designed classrooms that give students the resources they need to flourish and succeed within the School of Technology. Hands-on vocational classes allow students to experience how work sites operate and are large enough to build small model houses to gain practical trade skills. A catalyst for jumpstarting young minds and preparing students for bright futures, the school is a great place for students to learn special transferrable skills that will facilitate the transition to college and careers. As part of the Essex County Schools of Technology, the Payne School has been recognized for its outstanding academic performance and its efforts to energize the community.

The best part of Essex County Payne Tech is the CTE classes. They allow you to be apart of what your future may look like.

I've had an overall great experience here at Payne Tech. Not once have I felt the fear of being unsafe. This school works hard so everyone is safe. They take every student into consideration and I believe that builds such a positive culture.

My time at Payne was overall great with some obvious bumps and highlights. The building is amazing and probably the best thing about Payne. The food here was decent, definetly better than most highschools in jersey. The problem here however, like most schools in the system, is how teachers are treated pay wise. I had a total of three AP Calculus AB teachers during my senior year which definetly did not help my score. These teachers left for a better, higher paying job.

Only knowing this school for three days, I could tell you that at this school it is imperative to do your work and want you to learn items that are taught to you during your time at the school. Most importantly, to come to school, this will almost guarantee your success. Homework is important to do...
