The school is named after James Giles, a local farmer and superintendent of Norridge schools in the late 1800s. Originally a small one-room schoolhouse during the previous century, a larger, four-classroom brick structure was constructed in the 1920s, along with a later, larger annex added in the 1950s. J Giles Elementary seeks to develop students who are independent, collaborative, and motivated in a learning environment that is safe and positive. The school includes athletic programs in boys and girls softball, soccer, and basketball, as well as yearly dances, field trips, and spirit weeks The school encourages parent involvement in various activities and programs, including an active Parent Teacher Association.
