St. Barnabas is Northfield’s only Catholic grade school serving students in preschool through eighth grade who come from Northfield and the surrounding communities. With an enrollment of just under 500 students, it has been serving students in the greater Northfield community since it opened its doors in 1957. The school is located within the St. Barnabas Catholic Parish and is named after its patron saint, St. Barnabas, a disciple of Jesus from Cyprus.
The St. Barnabas curriculum is written by the Diocese of Cleveland and is designed to meet the Ohio Department of Education state standards. Students participate in prayer, mass and religious education while attending. The school was rated a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, indicating that it exceeds state standards and is making progress in closing achievement gaps among students.
In addition to academics, students at St. Barnabas can take advantage of a range of extracurricular programs, including band, choir, robotics club, drama club and the school’s in-house news station. Students are also encouraged to participate in Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) athletics, including basketball, cross country, cheerleading, football, soccer, track, volleyball and more.

My family transferred into St. Barnabas from another local Catholic school and the difference between the two schools was mind blowing. The rigor of the curriculum was outstanding. The athletic department was outstanding. My children felt comfortable and welcomed from the first moment they entered the building.
