As a signature academy in Roosevelt School District No. 66 in South Phoenix, V. H. Lassen Academy of Science and Nutrition serves children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. At this public elementary school, students complement a core curriculum of math, science, English language arts, social studies, and physical education with a special program focused on nutrition, gardening, and farming. Without leaving the school grounds, students can learn agriculture by getting their hands dirty with lessons taught by certified teachers and local farmers in the school’s own garden. With a mission to provide more food security, V.H. Lassen partners with local nonprofit Spaces of Opportunity to help residents in Phoenix gain affordable access to healthy food through innovations in farming and community gardens. The school also hosts a weekly community pantry that offers non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, health supplies, and fresh produce for students in need. Students can transfer their food and gardening skills to culinary courses where they learn how to create plant-based dishes. They can also burn energy in a number of extracurricular team sports including volleyball, soccer, and basketball. To stay connected with the community, V.H. Lassen hosts annual events such as a fall festival and winter celebration as well as monthly forums for parents and caregivers with the school’s principal.
