Lincoln Middle School sits in the Deering section of Portland and is the oldest of the three public schools on Stevens Avenue, joining Deering High School and Longfellow Elementary. Lincoln Middle School serves more than 470 students and boasts a student-to-teacher ratio of 10-to-1. Entering sixth graders are assigned to an interdisciplinary team or “house” and stay together with these instructors for the entirety of their sixth and seventh grade years. The reason this is done is to promote a sense of togetherness and community between both pupils and teachers. One of the first assignments the sixth graders have is to name the newly formed houses. Houses are further subdivided into lion’s prides. The pride structure provides each student with a one-to-one relationship with an adult advisor as well as a consistent peer community. In addition to academics, Lincoln offers students over 18 clubs in which to participate in extracurricular activities. Some of these clubs include a cooking club, a craft club, a makerspace and a comic book club. Other programs at the school include an overnight adventure experience for seventh graders and eighth graders to maintain a geodesic dome on school grounds that acts as a sustainable classroom complete with solar energy and greenhouse beds.

Most of the teachers are great and care about the students and there are sufficient supports for students with different learning abilities. From an administrative point of view, it seems to be controlled chaos and unchecked bullying.
