The Longfellow Elementary School is a kindergarten through fifth grade school in the Deering Center neighborhood of Portland and is part of the Portland Board of Education. With about 350 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1, Longfellow consistently lands in the top 5% rating of Maine’s elementary schools. Longfellow School, built in 1952, is a brick, three level building located on Stevens Avenue beside Deering High School and one block from Lincoln Middle School. Curriculum focuses on a variety of learning opportunities for its students. The school’s mission statement, “Within the Longfellow community, we are committed to honoring uniqueness, nurturing growth, and making a difference” is demonstrated through programming decisions that integrate academics with the students’ lived experiences. Older students have the opportunity to take part in extended musical opportunities by participating in an in-school strings program, band or by singing in the chorus. The school’s proximity to the high school invites collaborative activities between students from both schools, like a recent coat drive during the winter months. An active Parent-Teacher Organization sponsors activities throughout the year, including the summer. It keeps parents notified through a website and a Facebook page, while the school also maintains a website through the Portland Public schools page and school and district information is easily accessible.
