In 2009, Providence was nicknamed the ‘Creative Capital’ to highlight the city’s investment in education and the arts. Since then, schools with unique curriculums have begun sprouting up, with Charette High School being one of them. Charette provides Providence students with a high-tech learning environment where they focus on the topics of urban planning and historic preservation. The idea behind Charette’s curriculum is to encourage students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and lifelong participants in civic affairs. Frequently explored themes include neighborhood revitalization, crumbling infrastructure, as well as transit systems and optimizing public spaces. Students strategize and find solutions for current urban planning issues such as the Superman Building, Interstate 195 and the future of Providence’s waterfront. Preserving the city’s rich colonial history is a focal point of the school’s college preparatory program, and students have the opportunity to work on existing design projects throughout the city. Students aren’t required to become architects or urban planners, but they are encouraged to learn and work in an environment that is collaborative and community-centered.
