The Wheeler School, located in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, was founded in 1889 by Mary C. Wheeler. This independent, co-educational college preparatory school enrolls students from pre-school through grade 12. Wheeler School faculty are experts in the arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and humanities. Wheeler’s lower school includes pre-school through grade 5. Faculty are dedicated to helping children build skills in reading, math and language arts in a safe and trusting environment. The Wheeler middle school, grades 6-8, encourages students to express their curiosity and ask questions to prepare them for high school. The upper school, grades 9-12, challenges students academically and prepares them to take the next steps toward college. A highlight is the digital production studio, where 11th graders get the opportunity to produce their own podcasts.

A great school, but honestly, I have been very underwhelmed. I had high expectations when leaving my former school, but I haven't really been impressed. Wheeler promised a lot, but in the end, I feel like I haven't received what they advertised. There are a lot of fancy events, but I feel like there is a lack of true school culture and academic rigor. A lot of my classmates just joke around and my teachers seem very passive.

Wheeler has been such an amazing place for me to meet new people, explore my interests, and balance academics with clubs and sports. Throughout my past two years at Wheeler, I have made so many life long friends that are supportive and kind and every single one of my teachers helps me in every way that they can to make sure I succeed.

Our son has found teachers who are true mentors. He has been supported as the person he is, and not forced to conform to a stereotyped standard. Only Wheeler could have provided him with this totally individualized education.

I have had two boys at the school and found it to be an excellent school - with a good balance of strong academics, a wide range of sports and activities, excellent teaching, and a strong track record of college placement after high school (Ivies and other top 20 colleges). As some of the other revi...

The school offers a very rigorous academic experience that in my opinion is too much. Many students at the school are stressed and overwhelmed with the amount of excessive academic overload. The school can develop a more holistic approach to every student so that they can be successful in all areas...

I was a student there for four years, and eagerly left. The student population was shallow and petty, but self-congratulatory for their "incredible diversity" and "unity". The administration and teachers boosted students' incredibly inflated egos and refused to expose them to the realities of the wo...
