The Academy of Academic Excellence's mission is to customize every student's education through various programs that enhance each child's talents and potential. Teachers select objectives for each student and monitor their progress so they can adjust the level of difficulty if needed. The school's goal is to meet each child where they are and inspire a lifelong love of learning. The school was founded in 1997 by Rita Busch, who believed that a customized curriculum combined with multi-age grouping was the best method to teach students effectively. Every classroom features a Promethean board, iPads and a variety of learning manipulatives. The campus also boasts a library, computer lab and a playground with an outdoor café and classroom space. Specialized programs give each child the opportunity to explore areas of interest. The STEM program allows students to participate in engineering, coding and robotics activities. Its Spanish program begins in pre-K and continues through the end of fifth grade, with students graduating with the ability to read and write in the language. Other students enter the Gifted and Talented program, which The College of William & Mary created to teach the art of persuasive writing. The Academy of Academic Excellence also has an excellent arts program that encourages students to express their creativity through performing arts, visual arts, music and creative writing. Although they do not have sports teams, the curriculum includes a weekly gym class and lots of outdoor activities.
