Surrounded by nature, George F. Baker Elementary School is not in short supply of unique opportunities for student growth. This public elementary school has a nature trail, a nature building and a Presidential Grove that was developed from the Eastern Henrico Ruritan Club’s donation of 20 trees from the homes of four Virginia presidents. Also, in honor of a former staff member of the school, there is a beautiful garden planted on the premises. Serving students in prekindergarten through fifth grade, Baker Elementary is named after George F. Baker, who was principal of Varina School from 1916 to 1940. While test scores at this school are slightly lower than the state’s average, students are making good academic progress from grade to grade compared to other students in this state. Baker holds a field day for students towards the end of the school year, and they encourage parents to volunteer to help facilitate the exciting day for students. There is also a Transition Night at the end of the year for rising kindergarten through fifth graders and a Spring Book Fair to encourage students to develop a love for reading. For the holidays, the school hosts a Trunk-or-Treat for staff, households and students to come together.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
