Richmond, Virginia’s, first charter elementary school, Patrick Henry School of Sciences and Arts (PHSSA) was founded as part of a revival effort of the Woodland Heights neighborhood in the city. The Patrick Henry Board desired a diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic population that incorporated environmental science and arts; thus, PHSSA was born in 2008. With a mission statement for students to achieve maximum growth and develop leadership skills through environmental science and arts curriculum, PHSSA believes students learn best through an integrated learning approach. As part of the school's curriculum, students get to participate in growing gardens, field trips, and visit the local Forest Hills Park often. Having students assist in the gardens is very important to the PHSSA learning environment, and they take great pride in their gardens. Their butterfly garden is a certified and nationally registered Official Monarch Waystation. As a part of Richmond Public Schools, PHSSA serves approximately 350 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. There is an admissions application for the school, and the school has a limited number of students it can accept each school year. If demand exceeds space, the school conducts a lottery system to select the incoming students. The school has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, which is average for the state.

I have found that you can be as involved as you want to be. Because it has a unique circumstance of requiring 24 hours of volunteer services from parents, I find that the parents are very involved. The school also has a garden and conducts classes outside when possible.

Since 2020, things have only been getting better here. Everyone cares and is trying so hard, it's a fantastic environment for our children to be lucky enough to be a part of, especially when hearing from other rps and ccps elementary parents.

I had decided to home school during covid but applied to have my child attend PHSSA and got in! I was really worried about them being behind socially and emotionally because of the time mostly isolated for home school, but teachers and staff made all the difference. Children are so nice as well, non...

Very good, far experiences with staff and other parents. There is a real sense of community that definitely improves the overall experience. Very diverse staff and student body.
