For more than 40 years, Woodlake Elementary School has served thousands of kindergarten through sixth grade students in North Sacramento. This public institution, part of the Twin Rivers School District, lives by the motto, “Every minute, every day, every student,” which highlights its devotion to excellence and growth. Woodlake Elementary School offers many opportunities for students to get involved and challenge themselves. Its accelerated reader program encourages students to read and take quizzes that assess their comprehension and reward them for exceptional performance. Fourth through sixth grade students can also get involved in student council, which teaches them to be effective leaders and team players. Furthermore, Woodlake Elementary School offers an expanded learning program after school, which provides academic support and enriching activities. Students can participate in intramural sports, arts and crafts, or a variety of clubs — Girl Scouts, gardening and cooking. While the school is aiming to increase student performance on test scores, they have useful systems in place, such as a 21-to-one student-to-teacher ratio, which offers ample individualized attention and instruction. Woodlake Elementary officials also hold students accountable for their behavior, and expect them to respect their surroundings and fellow learners.

I've had kids at Woodlake for three years now. There are some great teachers but the curriculum is horrific (in part due to CommonCore), the overall experience has been rough, and the after school (MASTERS) program, there to help with homework and enrich kids afternoons, has gone downhill and my chi...
